Name: Rojer Porras
Age: 15
Gender: Male
Sexual orientation: Mainly heterosexual.
Play-by: Mark Indelicato
Pernese Settler info
Craft/job: Sailor
Rank: Deckhand
Location at Threadfall: A fishing hold to the north and east of Landing, right on the sea.
Do they approve of the genetic tinkering?: If it’ll help against Thread, he’s all for it.
Appearance:
Rojer is currently a hair under 5’11”, and he’s likely to have at least one more growth spurt that’ll put him over 6’. He had short, dark brown hair that he really does try to keep neat and brushed, it’s just that he spends a lot of time either near or out on the water, and the wind whips it into a tangled mess. His skin is a mostly even medium brown, a combination of genetics and a nearly-permanent suntan. Likewise, he does try to dress neatly, but he also sees no reason to ruin nice clothing if he’d going to be out working. And since getting things running on the island is a lot of work, he’s usually just in canvas trousers and a thick, much stained and patched shirt.
Personality: Rojer was, until recently a pretty happy, easy-going young man. Then Threadfall happened, and he saw both his parents killed by Thread as they tried to make it back to the house they all shared. Since then he’s been quieter, more inclined to keep to himself. He was more or less adopted by the crew of the Queen’s Bounty, and is very dedicated to the ship and it’s crew. Perhaps unsurprisingly he has a deep hatred of Thread, and while he doesn’t quite understand the dragon project, if it gives them a way to keep Thread from killing more people then it’s a good thing. He can get very angry at people that don’t agree, especially if they don’t have any better ideas of what to do against Thread.
He’s prone to moodiness, and isn’t fond of most people outside the crew of the Queen’s Bounty. He’s very defensive and quick to lash out in anger, usually verbally, but sometimes physically as well. He’s had to mature quickly since his parents’ death, and thus doesn’t feel like he really belongs amongst people of his age group.
History:
Rojer was young enough when the colonists arrived on Pern that he doesn’t really have any clear memories of ever living anywhere else. His parents were one of the first groups to move out of Landing. He remembers the first few years being hard, and regular trips back to Landing for supplies and replacements for supplies they and their neighbors couldn’t yet make themselves. But that changed slowly, and their small community began to function more and more independently. They were on the very edge of the first Threadfall, so it had very little impact on their lives - no more so than any other potential natural disaster, if one stranger than anyone had seen before.
All in all, Rojer grew up in a pretty normal community, learning to fish and sail alongside his parents with only vague thoughts towards the future. He worked, he goofed off, he had friends, and even a crush on one of the girls in the community.
Then, in an instant, that all changed. Threadfall hit the community directly and unexpectedly. Everyone had dashed for their homes or nearby shelter as soon as the silvery Thread had been spotted, but Rojer’s parents had just come in from fishing, and had to tie up their boat. Rojer was watching out the window as they came running towards the house, but they weren’t fast enough to outrun the Thread, and he saw as both were devoured.
Various neighbors came by in the following days and weeks to express their condolences and make sure he was getting on all right, but Rojer took three days before he said anything again, and a full sevenday before he left the house. Even once he had he was quieter and more withdrawn than he had been. For reasons even he didn’t really understand he started spending more and more time at the docks. He’d help out with loading or unloading or whatever minor tasks he could find, and found that keeping busy was the best way to keep the grief at bay. He befriended several of the crew of the Queen’s Bounty and they in turn sort of adopted him, becoming both friends and surrogate parents to the young man. He became an official member of the crew a few months before the mass evacuation was announced.
The crossing was one of the most terrifying experiences of his life, but he was grateful to have survived. Now it’s just a matter of continuing to do so.
Dragon
Name: Weyloth
Colour: Brown
Hatching date: 10.8.28
Weyloth will always be lean dragon, but he’s also big for his colour. Much of this comes from being generally taller than the other browns, but he’ll have the length as well. He just doesn’t carry the same sort of bulk that the larger males tend to be known for. He’s a brilliant reddish brown that has bright undertones of orange in direct sunlight and a speckling of dark spots over his face, neck and shoulders.
Weyloth is a loud and exuberant creature that can be a bit in your face and argumentative, but he’s a faithful thing, the kind of sidekick anyone would want next to them. Which is great and all, but he won’t see the value in this. He doesn’t want to be on the sidelines and will hold some resentment to the bronzes and golds who overshadow him. Just because they’re all shining and glittery, they shouldn’t be any more special and worthwhile than he is and he’ll make a lot of noise about it (partially to hide the jealousy he has towards them). It doesn’t help his case that he’s a bit fumbling, a bit awkward and with very little understanding of emotional issues at all. Not that he’s trying to be a jerk, but he doesn’t have much grasp on sensitivity or tact.
It’s not for lack of trying though, Weyloth really does have a good heart and he’ll surprise even himself with the skill he shows in fighting Thread. The difficulty will be in that he doesn’t really believe he’s good enough and this is what affects his performance, but when he’s feeling strong and confident he’ll be able to show up many of his clutchmates.
Pets: Cargo
Type: Bronze (wild) firelizard
Cargo is a long and lanky firelizard, with an almost brassy sheen to his hide. Unlike a lot of wild firelizard, he’s very clingy to Rojer, often wrapping himself around the boy’s shoulders. He’s also very vocal, and loves to chatter and whistle at everything passing by. He’s pretty fearless, and seemingly very confident that he is a bronze and therefore there is nothing he can’t handle.
Rojer has been trying to train him, with mixed results. He will come when called (usually), and has learned to leave things alone when Rojer asks. He’s less than adept at delivering messages, often delivering them to the wrong person, or forgetting all together.
