Do they approve of the genetic tinkering? He worries, of course, but has faith in Dr. Seng and the team’s work.
Appearance:
Amed could pass for a handsome man, with a bit of fixing up. At 6’0”, he is taller than some men, shorter than others. He had a fit and toned body, with a tendency toward slimness- if with a few soft spots that a more active life would’ve turned to pure muscle. His hands (and his feet, to his displeasure) are on the large side, though the fingers are as long and delicate as any lady could dream of.
His thick, dark brown hair has a hint of curl when it grows long enough, but Amed keeps it short so it stays out of his eyes. His face and lips are thin, and his nose blunt, but his eyes are lovely: a warm, dark brown, that light up with enthusiasm when he’s excited about something.
Personality:
Amed always was a serious person, mature beyond his age in some ways. He’s always the one who insisted every toy be put back in its place after use, and every chore be done before play. He’s very protective of his little siblings’ persons and his mother’s honor, and has been in more than one fist fight in their defense- not always the winner, but he can definitely stand his ground. He enjoyed being helpful to the women who minded he and the other children, and wasn’t the type to do stupid or irresponsible stuff to try and befriend the more adventurous children. He’d still go along on those ill-advised ventures, but usually as the worrywart who plans for the worst and got yelled at for spoiling peoples’ fun.
Amed the young man isn’t much different. He’s a detail-oriented person who likes order, numbers, putting in late hours, and having the sense that things would be a lot messier without him around. He possesses the stubborn politeness to both act as a screen for his boss, and to withstand his colleagues’ worst moods while still making productive suggestions. He is generally obedient and deferential, more content to pursue scientific discovery and personal harmony than to cater to his own ego.
Amed wants to be a hero. He has something of a crush on Dr. Seng, though he’ll never get up the nerve to tell her so. He tends to be shy with his crushes and fumbles for words around anyone he feels the need to make a good impression on. Amed is entirely capable of independent action, but tends to be a follower, most comfortable acting within the larger framework of rules and an authority figure’s orders. Before the Dragon Incident, the most daring he’d ever been was to leave his family group for Landing with no clear plan of what he’d do when he got there.
Amed is both honorable, yet practical. He clings to tales ideas of honor and duty and takes them dead seriously. However, he’s okay with making little compromises in reality if it will serve the greater ideal. He’ll back his friends to the end, but had very little compassion for people he dislikes or has decided are a liability to those he does like.
History:
Amed was born a fish out of water. He was plucked from Earth to Pern before he’d gotten a chance to explore much of the world beyond his family, but it was enough for the young boy to begin aspiring to cities and Universities rather than goats and sheep. But his family loved the idea of Pern, where they could explore a new world and have the freedom to follow the nomadic ways of their ancestors. They adjusted just fine.
Amed’s own resentment lessened as time marched on and he tried to be a good son, but never entirely disappeared. He hated the boring stretches of guarding the herds, the repetitious nature of his days. He accompanied his father whenever the man took their stock back to Landing to be sold, sneaking books out of his own allowance and making plans for the future that didn’t match the vision his family had for him. And at fifteen, after the announcement of his betrothal to a good neighbor girl, he kissed his mother good-bye and never looked back.
Amed fit into Landing like he’d been born there, smart as a whip and always eager to help out. He ended up helping out in the lab of Dr. Channary Seng. For the first time ever he got to do what he loved and be respected for it, doing vital work for the colony and making friends he wasn’t related to. Life was good.
Then Thread fell and murdered the family that Amed had thought he’d grown beyond, dealing a devastating blow to the young man. He wasn’t highly enough ranked to check, but with their nomadic lifestyle survival was unlikely. He threw himself into his work, and then the Dragon Project, desperate to salvage something constructive from the whole mess. His fellow assistants became the only family he had left, and when they hatched their insane plan, Amed put aside his own doubts to help them.
Amed knows that Eliot got up to more mischief in that lab than he’s saying. He hates the other man’s sloppiness, his irreverent irritability and his self-centered greed. Unlike the other man, Amed know there’ll be hell to pay for this stunt- and he knows the perfect scapegoat. He has no problem with implicating Eliot for thievery and coercion when asked, or with bribing the other apprentices to back up his version of the story. They’ll likely thank him for gifting them with a convenient cover. No omelet ever got made without breaking a few eggs, and better Eliot Tzarko than they or Dr. Seng.
Dragon
Name: Eeventh
Colour: Blue
Hatching date: 10.8.28
Eeventh is itty bitty, a compact little thing that is more the size of a green than the rest of his blue brothers. He’s a cheerful, bright sky blue with wide, expressive eyes and an earnest, happy look on his face that never seems to fade.
There some wonder if Eeventh was potentially one of the embryos that was handled with a bit less care than the others, his small size being a bit of a concern but he certainly makes up for it with personality. Borderline neurotic, he’s a painfully excitable thing that can’t seem to hold himself still for very long. Eeventh is ready and never seems to lack for energy, even when he seems like he should be exhausted. There will be no lack of bravery and he’ll be thrilled to volunteer for anything and everything, though his rider will have to be careful because often Eeventh has more enthusiasm than sense.
Of course, he will be his rider’s biggest fan. Eeventh will be a bit more attached to his chosen than seems strictly healthy and doesn’t seem to understand the concept of personal space or boundaries. What are you doing? Hey, can I help? I can do this too! There’s not much space for peace or quiet, but it’s difficult to be upset when this blue is just so happy to be involved in anything his person is doing. This will be something he extends to the bigger dragons, particularly the big power bronzes, whom he will hero worship. Whichever dragon is the one to do anything first will be the most amazing thing to Eeventh and then will have a hard time shaking the little guy.
